LOS ANGELES — Tyler Perry is bringing one of his most recognizable film franchises back to the screen.
Netflix has released the teaser trailer for “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?,” the third installment in Perry’s marriage-centered comedy-drama series. The film is set to stream Sept. 9 and reunites several familiar faces from the original ensemble while introducing a new generation of characters.
Perry returns as writer, director and star, reprising his role as Terry. The cast also includes Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker and Sharon Leal. Taraji P. Henson joins the franchise as Roselyn, the mother of the groom, adding a new dynamic to the longtime friend group.
The new film follows the original couples as they reunite in Lake Como, Italy, for the wedding of Marcus and Angela’s daughter. What begins as a destination celebration quickly becomes another emotional check-in for the group, as the characters are forced to reflect on the marriages, mistakes and examples they have modeled for their children.

The sequel continues the story that began with 2007’s “Why Did I Get Married?” and continued with 2010’s “Why Did I Get Married Too?” Both films became audience favorites for blending Perry’s signature humor with dramatic conversations about commitment, betrayal, forgiveness and friendship.
This time, the focus shifts toward legacy. The couples are older, their children are grown, and the questions that once defined their own relationships are now being mirrored by the next generation.
The ensemble also features Armani Greer, Everett Osborne, Da’Vinchi, Laya Deleon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Charles L. Smith II, Derrick A. King and Sydney Winbush.
The teaser leans into the franchise’s familiar rhythm: stylish scenery, wedding-weekend tension, comedic one-liners and emotional confrontations. With the group gathered in Italy, old wounds and unresolved issues appear to rise alongside the joy of the wedding celebration.
Perry has said the new chapter explores how the characters have matured and how love has carried them through difficult seasons. Henson, who has worked with Perry on several projects, brings a fresh presence to the franchise as a powerful businesswoman entering the group’s already complicated circle.

Production also came with a real-life challenge for Perry, who revealed he broke his collarbone shortly before filming began. The filmmaker continued directing and acting through the injury, joking in interviews that cast members became used to hearing him warn them to watch his shoulder during scenes.
“Why Did I Get Married Again?” is the latest project in Perry’s ongoing partnership with Netflix, where he continues to write, direct and produce film and television projects across genres.
For longtime fans, the sequel offers a return to one of Perry’s most beloved ensembles. For new viewers, it introduces a multigenerational story about marriage, friendship and the ways family patterns can repeat themselves.
The question, once again, is simple: Why did they get married?
